MASSENA -- The St. Lawrence River Walleye Association for the 15th year will host their Walleye Challenge this Saturday.

Fishing will be on the St. Lawrence from the top side of the Robert Moses Power Dam to the Iroquois Dam in Waddington.

“There will be plenty of room to fish from dam to dam,” said event coordinator Mike Gagner of the SLRVA.

Fishing will run from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. out of the Massena Intake, with scales opening at noon. Registration is the night before at the Massena Rod and Gun Club, Patterson Road.

“You don’t have to be a member of the walleye association to participate,” Gagner said. “Anyone’s welcome.”

First prize teams will get a cash prize, plus plaques and hats.

The fee covers two-person teams, but individuals can also sign up, he said.

There will be an optional contest for heaviest walleye of the day, for an additional $20.

He said some years featured more than 50 boats registered, but attendance has dipped for the last couple Walleye Challenges.

People can get more information on the tournament, including full rules, at stlawrenceriverwalleyeassociation.com. The group also has a Facebook page.
