CANTON -- The Hartwell T. Martyn GAR Post in Canton was named in honor of a young soldier who died when the U.S. transport ship North America sank off the coast of Florida in December 1864.

Find out more about this maritime disaster which claimed the lives of nearly 200 sick or wounded Union soldiers at the SLCHA Civil War Roundtable Sunday, Feb. 22, at 2 p.m. at 3 East Main St.

Sue Longshore, executive director of the SLCHA, will lead the discussion of the North America disaster, which foundered and sank while transporting some 200 sick and wounded Union soldiers from Louisiana hospitals back north to New York City to recuperate.

Among those on the ship, were a number of soldiers from the 11th NY Cavalry and the 18th NY Cavalry from Northern New York, including at least 20 men from St. Lawrence County who were lost.
