CANTON -- Sheep and Goat Basics Training offered in April by Cornell Cooperative Extension Associations of Northern New York offers the chance to develop many different livestock production skills.

Afternoon on-farm sessions Thursday April 14 from 1 to 4 p.m. include sheep handling, hoof trimming, and temperature taking with live sheep and goats. Evening classroom sessions from 7 to 9 p.m. will focus on feeding and health management.

Livestock Educator Betsy Hodge, with Cornell Cooperative Extension of St. Lawrence County, says beginners and new farmers can learn about how to avoid sickness, what vaccinations sheep and goats need, how to work with a veterinarian, and about the different types of forages, grains and minerals.

Hodge says the programs were scheduled during school breaks so youth can also attend the training, which will be held at Cooperative Extension’s Leaning Farm on Rt. 68.

The fee is $5 per farm or family.

Call Cooperative Extension of St. Lawrence County at 379-9192 for info and to register.
