Fire, rescue and emergency medical services (EMS) personnel are invited to free training on silo fires.
Jefferson Community College will host the Garrett Loomis Fire Safety and Educational Series beginning with a silo fire safety seminar, Extinguishing Silo Fires: Safety on the Agricultural Fire Ground, on Saturday, April 14 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Jules Center Amphitheater, Room 6-002.
The seminar is open to emergency personnel of Jefferson, Lewis, St. Lawrence, Oswego, Onondaga and Oneida Counties. Registration is free.
Attendees will learn how to differentiate between conventional silos and oxygen limiting silos. Silos are all over the North Country and fire departments are responding to fires around them frequently.
David E. Hill of Penn State conduct the seminar. Hill led the development of the Pennsylvania Agricultural Rescue and Emergency Medical Services Programs. He is a licensed paramedic and a member of his local fire department for nearly 30 years.
Registration deadline is April 2. Attendees will receive a complimentary publication on fighting silo fires.
