CANTON – The history of the Civil War will come to life for children at the Second Saturday children's program "Life in the Civil War: Soldiers, Women's Roles & Salt Pork," Saturday, Jan. 8 at the St. Lawrence County Historical Association.
This program will be led by Martha Maine and is another in the SLCHA's series of free monthly educational programs for kids age 4-10.
Martha Maine, who is a Civil war re-enactor as well as a member of SLCHA's Civil War Roundtable and Civil War Sesquicentennial Commission, will be dressed as a Union soldier when she talks to kids about the life of soldiers and the roles of women in the Civil War. Children will also get a chance to taste cornbread and salt pork, two staples in the diet of Civil War Soldiers, as well as a chance to decorate coloring sheets to take home.
The program begins at 11 a.m. in the Children's Attic on the second floor of the historical association. Parents, grandparents and other caregivers are welcome to attend this free program.
