CANTON -- SUNY Canton will host a science enthusiast who will help children explore astronomy, bridge design and rockets.

Edge on Science will be holding a stargazing session from 7 to 11:30 p.m. Saturday, June 13, on the field in front of SUNY Canton near the water tower. The event is free and open to anyone.

Additionally, the same organization will offer bridge building camp July 6 to 10 and summer rocket camp from July 13 to 17. Each camp will run daily from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The programs are designed for children ages 10 to 14. Camp Director John Aviste said middle school children are exactly the right age to take an interest in science and technology.

"I really enjoy offering students an immersive experience," Aviste said. "SUNY Canton is a great place to hold camp because the college already has a focus on hands-on learning."

The bridge building camp allows students the opportunity to engineer and build a model bridge. At the rocket camp, students build and test their own rockets.

The camps include hands-on activities and real-life challenges. Each camp emphasizes teamwork, creativity and imaginative thinking. On the fifth and final day of the rocket camp, family and friends are welcome to come and watch a rocket launch.

Both camps are limited to 14 children. Parents can register their child online at edgeonscience.com. The cost is $260 per student for each camp.
