Safe boating course to launch in Ogdensburg

OGDENSBURG -- The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary will host a certified “About Boating Safely” course March 27 and 28 at the United Helpers Mosaic Center, 100 Ford St., from 5-9 p.m.

This course is required in New York State for everyone 14 years old or older operating a personal watercraft (i.e. jet ski), and, motor boat operators born on or after May 1, 1996, and at least 10 years of age.

Instructors are local auxiliary members with years of experience teaching boating safety and interacting with students.

Participants must attend both nights. The “About Boating Safely” certificate and card are awarded at the end of the second night and are valid in New York State and all other states, and easily replaced if lost or damaged.

Cost is $35 per person (a family plan is available). Participants can pre-register at the Gardner Furniture and Flooring booth at the Boys and Girls Expo, March 23-25, or by contacting Gardner’s Furniture and Flooring at 315-393-6488, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Coast Guard Auxiliary is the uniformed civilian component of the U.S. Coast Guard and supports the Coast Guard in nearly all mission areas.

The Auxiliary was created by Congress in 1939.
