RUSSELL -- The Russell Arsenal Heritage Weekend, which will feature period demonstrations, will be held Sept. 21 to Sept 23 to celebrate the bicentennial of the War of 1812.
Friday Forsyth’s rifles will be setting up period camps at the Russell Attwater farm. Visitors are welcome to stop by to see the re-enactors and pick up a program for the weekend festivities.
The celebration will feature an encampment by Forsyth’s Rifles on Sept. 22nd at the Russell Attwater farm.
Demonstrations of 19th century music, cooking, midwifery, tinsmithing or blacksmithing will be held from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. The celebration will also feature a rope machine children’s games, chair caning, rush seating or making cordage with cattails, candlemaking, colonial lighting, spinning/carding, colonial clothing, fire-making, and a musket and artillery drill.
The Swe-kat-si Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will host a tea at the Russell Attwater Farm, which will be open to the public from 1 - 3 p.m. Historical materials will also be on display.
Other events include a Saturday night dinner at the fire department and a program at the Russell Opera House.
Sunday there will be a breakfast with the War of 1812 Civilians at the Russell Museum and Library, followed by a 10:45 a.m. march to the Balsam Cemetery. At 11 a.m. the Color Guard of the Forsyth’s Rifles will lay a wreath adjacent to the Russell Arsenal site. The morning will end with a recession by Forsyth’s Rifles.
