RENSSELAER FALLS -- The Rensselaer Falls Fire Department will host an open house Oct. 4 from 3 to 5 p.m. as a kickoff for Fire Prevention Week.
Attendees can check out equipment and fire trucks and hang out with firefighters.
There will be goody bags for kids and an inflatable obstacle course.
Other activities include a coloring contest for ages 12 and under and fire truck rides from 4:30 to 5 p.m.
The first 30 families through the door will get a free smoke detector with a 9-volt battery.
For $5, people can be entered into a contest for a home fire safety prize package. Valued at $280, it includes an emergency escape ladder kit, a vocal smoke alarm, a kitchen fire extinguisher, an LED flashlight two pack and two five-packs of 9-volt batteries.
