CANTON -- A student-led group from St Lawrence University will host this year’s Relay for Life, which will take place in Newell Field House starting at 6 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 11, and continue to 6 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 12.

Halley Choy ’17, of Saratoga Springs, is one of three tri-chairs of the student committee SLU Relay for Life, and has been participating in the fundraising events since high school.

“It started out as competition in one of our classes, where the winner got to shave our teacher’s head. I’d ask people to donate to Relay rather than give me money for my birthday,” Choy recalled.

“After my dad was diagnosed with lung cancer, it got a lot more personal. I’ve also had an aunt and a cousin die from cancer. So I want to raise as much as I can to help find a cure.”

Relay for Life is a nationwide event that aims to help raise money and awareness for American Cancer Society. During the 12-hour event, the St. Lawrence campus community will celebrate cancer survivors, remember loved ones who have lost their battle and fight back against cancer by raising awareness for cancer prevention.

The student committee is inviting St. Lawrence students, faculty and staff, as well as members of the local community, to form teams who will raise money and walk during the event. Twenty-two students teams have already signed up. The goal for this year’s event is $15,000.

The committee will host a Kick It Off event and trivia night, including free food, starting at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 2, in Pub 56.

The Relay for Life event will feature performances by the SLU Funk band and the Singing Sinners. There also will be Zumba, Karaoke, and games as well as cancer survivors who speak hroughout the relay.
