CANTON -- TAUNY will host the Sugar & Spice gingerbread contest again this year, with a “Gingerbread Around the World” theme.
The contest and accompanying exhibit began ten years ago to celebrate the gingerbread house tradition. Building gingerbread houses began in the 19th century, when the story of Hansel and Gretel became popular, according to TAUNY’s website.
In past years cottage participants have built everything from gingerbread lighthouses and farmsteads to streetscapes and forests.
To be eligible, entries must be made of gingerbread baked from scratch and must be entirely edible. Entries will be divided into three groups; adults, children with minimal adult help, and families.
Prizes will be awarded for each category, along with a People’s Choice Award. Entries will be judged on edibility, solidity of construction, originality, creativity, and fit with the theme.
Contest entries are due Thursday, Nov. 29 by 5 p.m., but pre-registration by Nov. 19 would be appreciated.
Judging will occur Saturday, Dec. 1, with entries on display from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. All entries will be on display through Saturday, Dec. 23.
