Recorded concert planned for Norwood July 4

NORWOOD -- A recorded audio concert will precede the Norwood Independence Day parade for early arrival audiences to enjoy.

The audio concert will begin at 10 a.m. with a break at noon so the crowd can enjoy St. Andrew’s July 4 Carillon program, and continue until the parade begins.

Several of the thirteen Norwood Village Green Concert Series Grammy Award winners will be featured, reflecting the series 40th anniversary. The featured artists include Steve Riley, Suzy Bogguss, Renée Fleming and Grammy Nominee Claire Lynch. It will also include some other past Norwood Village Green performers such as Downchild, The Bluegrass Gospel Project, Bill Staines and The Campbell Brothers.

The recorded audio concert was compiled by the series director, Joseph M. Liotta.

In playlist order the program starts with three orchestral arrangements, America the Beautiful, God Bless America and a George M. Cohan Medley. It continues with Cajun music from Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys. Frank Sinatra, Nat “King” Cole and Tony Bennett recordings will take the listener from San Francisco to New York and around the country. It then visits some Bluegrass Gospel as performed by The Bluegrass Gospel Project, and a unique Sacred Steel version of Amazing Grace by the Campbell Brothers, plus some country by Suzy Boggus and Claire Lynch. It continues with Cajun blues and some Chicago-style blues by Downchild. Then it returns to country, bluegrass and American folk music with a return of Claire Lynch, Suzy Bogguss and Bill Staines

In the last portion of the recording two Stephen Foster gems are sung by Suzy Bogguss (“Beautiful Dreamer”) and Renée Fleming (“Hard Times Come Again No More”). One of the most inspirational songs in the American musical lexicon, “You’ll Never Walk Alone” from Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Carousel” will then be sung by Ms. Fleming.

Two songs of the Civil War are next on the agenda. “The Kennesaw Line” will be sung by Claire Lynch. Its text is from the viewpoint of a Confederate soldier just before and during the battle of Kennesaw Mountain as part of Sherman’s Atlanta Campaign, in which there were 4000 casualties, 3000 on the Union side and 1000 on the Confederate side. The Battle Hymn of the Republic will be sung by the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir, a six-time Grammy Award winner. It will be performed, as it was this past January at the Presidential Inaugural, when the United States Marine Band accompanied the 280 voice choir.

The finale will be “The Star Spangled Banner “ as performed a capella by the United States Army Chorus.

A complete playlist for audience use will be available at the sound table near the Review Stand.
