CANTON -- A special presentation about Colton’s Raquette River whitewater release days will be held at the TAUNY center, 53 Main St., on Thursday, Aug. 31, from noon-1 p.m.
Kayakers travel from all over the world to brave the class V rapids created by these dam releases in Colton.
Phil LaMarche, a volunteer with American Whitewater who helps organize the kayaking events, will present the history of white water usage at Stone Valley and discuss the necessary logistics, including legal arrangements made with local dam operators.
This presentation will include thrilling videos and photos of the release. There is a $5 suggested donation for this event.
This program is a part of the program series for TAUNY’s latest exhibit, “‘Look Down, You’ll See Our Tracks’: Raquette River Dam Stories.”
This exhibit tells the stories of people involved in or significantly affected by the construction of the hydroelectric dams and powerhouses along the Raquette River. The exhibit will be on view at The TAUNY Center until Oct. 21.
Additional information about this and other programs in the exhibit program series can be found at tauny.org.
