Poverty forum to be held in Canton Tuesday, March 20

CANTON -- One hundred and ten representatives of community organizations and local schools will discuss poverty and trauma at a community forum this Tuesday, March 20, at Eben Holden Conference Center, St. Lawrence University.

Entitled “Poverty, Trauma and A Movement for Change,” the forum begins at 8:30 a.m. with a welcome from St. Lawrence-Lewis BOCES Superintendent Tom Burns. A key-note address by Beverly Ouderkirk, a member of the New York State Board of Regents who represents St. Lawrence County on the board that sets educational policy for the state, will follow.

The focus of the full day of activities will be to create opportunities for networking among community organizations and local schools, as well as to discuss strategies for addressing the unique needs of people in poverty and/or experiencing trauma.

The event is organized by the Institute for Learning Centered Education which is collaborating with the following sponsor organizations:

St. Lawrence-Lewis BOCES, Health Initiative, The People Project, St. Lawrence University’s North Country Symposium, St. Lawrence University, St. Lawrence Teachers’ Learning Center, Department of Social Services.
