POTSDAM -- Education is the focus of three of the four conversations featured on this week’s North Country Matters, the local public affairs video magazine produced by WCKN. With four new shows to air this week, there is a staggered viewing schedule.
First up Oct. 20 at 7:30 p.m., Peak Moment TV will offer a conversation between NCM host Donna Seymour and Dr. Kristen Esterberg, the new president of SUNY Potsdam. They discuss college affordability and access, campus safety, new programs, STEM and the Common Core, as well as teacher preparation. The YouTube link is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BzmYz97ZWv4.
At 8 p.m. that night, Seymour and Ann Carvill hold a candidate conversation with Jim Bunstone, running for District 10 on the St. Lawrence County Legislature, which covers much of the Village of Potsdam. Under discussion are county finances and budget matters, taxes, energy, and balancing the priorities between the needs of people and maintaining the infrastructure of the county. On Tuesday, at 7:30 p.m. NCM hosts Dr. Carole McCoy, the president of Jefferson Community College in Watertown. She discusses new initiatives at JCC, college affordability and access, campus safety, enrollment and STEM programs, STEM and the Common Core, as well as the partnerships of the college has with other schools.
The 8 p.m. show features at look at the promise the Common Core Standards hold with
Tom Burns, the St. Lawrence-Lewis BOCES School Superintendent. He describes the results of a field trip he took with North Country educators to the Ottawa-Carlton School in Ontario that instituted high academic standards in the mid- 1990s. The experience of those schools shows what New York schools can expect if the Core is allowed to proceed with proper support.
These four shows will be repeated on the next two nights. Watch the Esterberg and Bunstone shows on Wed., Oct. 22 at 7 and 7:30 pm. On Thurs., Oct. 23, you can watch the McCoy and Burns shows at 7 and 7:30 pm.
