POTSDAM -- The Potsdam Sandstone Festival opens Thursday, Sept 10, at 5 p.m. with jazz by local musicians Bill Vitek on guitar and Laura Brown on vocals at the Potsdam Public Museum, 2 Park St.

An organ recital with Sondra Goldsmith Proctor will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, 42 Elm St. on Friday, Sept. 11, at 1 p.m. Meet at the corner of Elm Street and Lawrence Avenue.

Also on Friday, Sept. 11, at 1 p.m. there will be a guided tour lead by Joe Liotta of the Zion Episcopal Church, 9 Main St. The building was built by the Clarkson family with a rose stained glass window.

Guided boat tours of the old Hannawa Falls railroad will be held on Saturday, Sept. 12, at 10 a.m. Meet at Ives Park and bring your own boat. Tours are lead by Russ Nelson. A rain date of Sept. 19 has been set.

Also on Saturday, there will be a guided tour of Trinity Episcopal Church on Fall Island, 8 Maple St. Tiffany window history will be discussed by Betsy Travis and there will be a book signing with Jim Carl, author or “The History of Trinity Church.”

The festival continues Thursday, Sept. 17, at 10 a.m. with a guided tour of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, 4897 State Highway 56, with Patrick Reinhart.

Also on Sept. 17 a guided tour of historic sandstone buildings in downtown Potsdam will be offered at noon. The event is lead by Potsdam Historian Mimi Van Deusen. Meet at the museum, 2 Park St.

A “Historic Preservation” PowerPoint presentation with Courtney Doyle is slated for 7 p.m. Sept. 17. Doyle will discuss how to make an application to the National Register. The event will take place at the Potsdam Public Museum and refreshments will be served in memory of Emilie V. Clarkson Moore.

A tour of Old Main, Clarkson University’s first building, is planned on Friday, Sept. 18, at noon. Meet at 53 Main St.

A guided tour of the Red Sandstone Trail in Hannawa Falls is slated for Saturday, Sept. 19, at 10 a.m. with St. Lawrence University geology professor Jeff Chiarenzelli. Meet at the trailhead on Mill Street in Hannawa Falls. Do not park or block the fire station when parking. The hike is fairly strenuous. Wear appropriate shoes. The tour takes about two hours.

On Sept. 19 from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. a guided tour will be held of the Parmeter–Hale House, 166 County Route 59. It is located at the bottom of the “s” curve on the Back Hannawa Road. Paula Youmell is the tour guide.

John and Susan Omohundro will host a guided tour of Batside Cemetery in Potsdam on Sunday, Sept. 20, at 2 p.m. There will also be a gravestone tour of SUNY Potsdam notables to celebrate the bicentennial, hosted by Mimi Van Deusen, Potsdam historian.
