Potsdam Public Library offering software, social media classes throughout November, into December

POTSDAM -- The Potsdam Public Library, 2 Park St., will offer several classes ranging from Skype, travel planning and LinkedIn.

On Nov. 17, from 12:30 until 2 p.m. “Using Skype” will be presented. This audio and visual communication program allows people to stay in touch and visit with friends and family, no matter where they are. Using Skype is free. Keyboard and mouse familiarity is needed as well as a valid email address.

An “Evernote” class will be offered Nov. 18 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Evernote allows people to electronically organize and consolidate documents and information on a variety of topics. The class will teach participants how to create an Evernote account, create and organize documents in it, and upload documents into it.

An intro to forums class will be held Nov. 19 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Learn to use this specialized type of website to exchange ideas, and expand knowledge about a general theme or a specific topic. Anyone can join and post their thoughts, opinions, establish connections to others with similar interests. Examples of topics include any hobby, religion, community concern, college or high school classes, movies, cars, etc

“Using Trip Advisor to Plan Your Travel” will be held Nov. 21 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. This website covers more than 6.5 million accommodations, restaurants and attractions around the world and links to hundreds of websites to find the best hotel prices. The workshop will explore the main features of Trip Advisor, discuss how to interpret reviews uploaded by travelers, and allow plenty of time for individual research. Prior experience using a Web browser required.

On Nov. 30, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. “Overdrive: Borrowing eBooks on your Tablet” will be offered. Have you ever wanted to “borrow” a library book by viewing it on your tablet? You can, with Overdrive; it’s an application that is available on many tablets. Learn how to set up an account at Overdrive, enter information, borrowing a book, and adjust settings. Overdrive automatically tracks the eBooks borrowed and returns them on the due date. The eBooks are saved on devices to be read anywhere. Users at all levels of skill are welcome. “Genealogy –Finding Your Family Online” is slated for Dec. 1 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. The Family Search website is an easy-to-use, free resource for locating family members. Discover information about family.

On Dec. 3 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 a LinkedIn class will provide information on how to create and effectively use a LinkedIn account. LinkedIn is a business-oriented social networking tool to find connections to recommended job candidates, industry experts and business partners. The class covers how to connect with people, how to input your information and create a profile. Bring a laptop and a professional photo of yourself saved on the computer. New users welcome.
