'True Love' flash art, by Schofield, 1930s, Coney Island, NY
POTSDAM -- “Skin and Ink” will exhibited at the Potsdam Public Museum, 2 Park St.
It shows tattoos, tattooing, the history of tattoos, examples of flash art, old tattooing equipment, tattoos in prisons, schools, and on the street.
In 1985, a collection of tattoo flash art and equipment was donated to the museum.
The images were once displayed in the donor’s father’s tattoo booth at Coney Island.
Most of the images are popular sailor tattoos from the 1920’s and 30’s.
The exhibition opens April 3 and the museum invites the public to share images of their tattoos with stories on their meaning to the recipient - to be included in the exhibit.
