Potsdam Community Band playing at Madrid Dam Series

MADRID -- The Potsdam Community Band will perform for the Madrid Dam Music Series Wednesday, July 18 at 6 p.m. at the Madrid Pavilion.

The concert is free and open to the public. Rain location will be the Equine Building at the St. Lawrence Power and Equipment Museum.

This year, over 70 musicians from a variety of backgrounds, abilities and communities around the region will perform under the experienced baton of PCB director Theresa Witmer.

Among the works to be performed will be the marches “Hands Across the Sea” by Sousa and “Bandology” by Osterling; the noble “Kirkpatrick Fanfare” by Boysen; the East European-flavored “Puszta suite” by Van der Roost; the sublime and reverent ‘Hymn to St. James” by Clark; and a medley of several tunes by the inimitable Cole Porter arranged by Robert Russell Bennett.

The band will also play a number of tunes on the lighter side of the wind band literature, including medleys from The Beatles, Disney’s “The Lion King” and the novel “Rollo Takes a Walk” by David Maslanka.

A highlight of July’s PCB concert will be the cornet duet “Short and Sweet” played by trumpeters Jim Madeja and Paul Buell, and backed by the entire band.

Potsdam Community Band’s Madrid Dam appearance is sandwiched between two other summer performances for the group. On Friday, July 13, the band made its annual appearance at the Potsdam Summer Festival in Ives Park at 6:30 p.m., and on July 21, PCB takes its second trek to Lake George, New York for the annual Community Band Festival in that Adirondack village.

The Madrid Dam Music Series is free to attend. Donations are welcome to fund future performances for Madrid. Some refreshments will be avaiable for purchase as will fundraising raffles.

The concerts are family friendly events with no strobe lighting, alcohol, or smoking.
