Potsdam Community Band to perform 'Marches, Movies and Magnificence' concert Sunday at Hosmer Hall

Admission is free, although donations will be accepted.

Donations from concert attendees help underwrite the band’s insurance, music licensing fees and other expenses.

Works to be performed include the concert march Brighton Beach by William Latham, The President’s March by Henry Fillmore, the exciting and intense Undertow by John Mackey, the multi-movement suite Joan of Arc by Robert Jager, Brian Balmages’ Arabian Dances, a suite of French folksongs called In the Forest of the King by Pierre LaPlante, Bruce Yurko’s Night Dances for Wind Ensemble; and three pieces from movies and Broadway, including The Best of Jule Styne, arranged by Jerry Nowak, The Bare Necessities (from The Jungle Book) by Terry Gilkyson and the dynamic theme from The Magnificent Seven by Elmer Bernstein.

Three of the pieces -- The Bare Necessities, The Magnificent Seven and The President’s March -- were purchased for the PCB with donations.

The band is composed primarily of adult musicians, evenly split between local music teachers and other professional-level performers, and those who could be considered more “occasional” players.

A smaller but growing percentage of the ensemble is made up of high school and college-aged musicians.

The band is under the direction of retired Potsdam Central School band director Theresa Witmer.

Players come from all over St. Lawrence and Franklin counties. Rehearsals for the concert began in November.

Band members cordially invite everyone to come out and support the North Country’s own community concert band and enjoy some fine traditional and contemporary wind band music.
