POTSDAM -- Preparedness is the theme the next Peak Moment TV program, aired on WCKN-TV Monday, Feb. 23 and Tuesday, Feb. 24 at 7 p.m.

Peak Moment TV host Janaia Donaldson chats with Caren Black and Christopher Paddon, who couldn’t find mentors to teach them self-reliant living when they became aware of peak oil. So they created a homestead and opened their doors to training others.

Just as the Titanic was thought to be unsinkable, they believe we’ve grown to believe our culture and lifestyle will continue forever, but they are taking on water. Fast. Like the Titanic, our current culture is on a collision course with the iceberg (Peak Oil, Climate Change, Population Overshoot & Economic Collapse), without enough “lifeboats.” We need to start building them now!

People can take a personalized Lifeboat Course online or in person, where hands-on learning includes food production with domestic animals and gardens, renewable energy, and carpentry skills. “We’re all in this together,” Christopher notes, so the couple educate, volunteer and share to also make their community more resilient. How can we independently and interdependently provide for our own food, shelter, clothing, energy, transport, technology, commerce, communication, and spiritual well-being?

Now in its seventh year locally, the Peak Moment TV programs explore locally reliant living for challenging times. Programs are underwritten locally by The Center for Excellence in Communication at Clarkson University and the Seymour Family of Potsdam.

Peak Moment topics include local food production, renewable energy, transportation alternatives, sustainable building, preparedness and psychological, business, and governmental responses. All programs are available at www.wordpress.peakmoment.tv/conversations/ in video and audio format.

More than 80 Peak Moment TV shows are available on DVDs and can be borrowed from the Potsdam Public Library, 2 Park St.
