POTSDAM – A Passover cooking class, a dinner for college students, a shabbat lecture, and an afternoon of music and folk dance have been set by Congregation Beth El, 81 Market St., this coming week.
A Cooking Class for Pesach runs from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, March 29. Join Ann Hazan as she shares her recipe for kebbe. This recipe has been passed down from Ann's grandmother, Rachel, who was born in Egypt. The recipe is Sephardic in origin and it makes an excellent appetizer at the seder.
The community is invited to share pizza, salad and dessert with students from the Four College Hillel. Dinner is served at 6 p.m., and will be followed by the Friday night shabbat service.
A shabbat lecture and lunch with Professor Elun Gabriel is set for 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, March 31. Gabriel, professor of European history at St. Lawrence University, will discuss the vibrant Jewish life in Germany in the 19th and early 20th centuries, which was largely destroyed by the Nazis. He will also discuss the revival of Jewish life after 1945 and consider how it resembles and differs from pre-Nazi Jewish life. In the talk, he will also explore the question of whether it is possible to have a "normal" Jewish German culture or whether the Holocaust will always be at the center of German-Jewish identity. Gabriel's talk will be followed by a lunch. RSVP by March 28 to info@potsdamsynagogue.org.
And on Sunday, April 1, from 1 to 3 p.m., is Dancing with the Jewish Stars,. an afternoon of music and Israeli folk dance with Hannah Gruber. These circle and line dances require no dancing partner. Israeli-style refreshments served. This event will be held at Clarkson University in conjunction with the Four College Hillel. For more information contact info@potsdamsynagogue.org.
