POTSDAM -- A workshop on planning an organic garden with the expertise of Daniel Martin of Martin's Needham Road Farm Stand outside of Potsdam is set for 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27.
It is not too early to start creating or looking to improve your North Country summer garden. In fact, winter is the time to make such plans.
In "Organic Gardening Planning & Practices," Martin will cover tilling, harvest, cover cropping, and will share his knowledge of weed management on their Mennonite farmstead. "As we walk, I'll also show some of the equipment that is used on the farm, explain how they work and why we use them," Martin said. There will be time for questions.
In addition to their farm stand, the Martin's established an innovative online market to offer their customers another option in finding fresh, locally grown produce. It can be viewed at martinsfarmstand.locallygrown.net/.
Registration is recommended but not required at LocalLivingVenture@gmail.com or 347-4223. It is important to include the number of people in your party and the best phone number to be reached on that day if needed. Local Living Venture will notify pre-registered attendees if there are changes. It is suggested that participants dress for the outdoors, bring drinking water, hat, sunglasses as needed, and shoes suitable for walking in the fields.
Suggested donation is $17, $30 for a couple, $7 student, to benefit Local Living Venture workshop creation.
Walk-ins are also welcome on site at 1:45 p.m. at the Needham Road Farm Stand, 4 miles east of Potsdam just off of Rt. 11B at 11 Needham Rd. There will be signs.
