Ogtoberfest Saturday at Lockwood arena in Ogdensburg to feature beer garden, German food, music with Double Axel, fireworks

OGDENSBURG -- The Greater Ogdensburg Chamber of Commerce 5th Ogtoberfest festival at the Lockwood Civic Center from 3 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 1 could draw upwards of 1,000 people.

Admission is $5 for adults and $4 for active or retired military.

“Ogtoberfest is a celebration of everything Ogdensburg and a way to get the community together,” said Laura Pearson, Greater Ogdensburg Chamber of Commerce executive director.

Highlights of Ogtoberfest include a beer garden sponsored by Hosmer's Marina, traditional German food provided by M&T concessions, live music by Double Axel, and evening fireworks by Majestic Fireworks presented by Mort Backus and Sons.

The event was held outside for its first three years and bad weather made turnout at the event lower than event organizers had hoped for.

“It was rainy and cold…made for a tough year,” she said.

Following some discussion the decision was made to move the event inside last year and it was well received.

“We moved it inside to the Lockwood Civic Center and have had a lot of compliments,” said event organizer Sean McNamara.

Numerous vendors will be on hand featuring local wines, treats, crafts and various other wares.

“This year we have more vendors …we have 18 so far, we only had 10 last year,” said Pearson.

Confirmed vendors are R & J Finds; Eye Candy; Woodhull Cigar Shop; the Natural Nook; Lakeland Winery; RiverMyst Winery; the Pampered Chef; Northern Flow Vineyards; Create-A-Can; Jamberry; Ogdensburg Association of Senior Citizens; Creative Ladys; The Ogdensburg Snackpack Program and Cellular Sales (Verizon).

The Chamber is inviting service clubs to promote their organizations and events at vendor tables during the event.

Live entertainment, a concert with Double Axel and entertainment from DJ Dave Merz, is sponsored by Cape Air and NYSCOPBA.

“Double Axel played high school dances in the 70s and 80s in this area,” McNamara said. “Even though they are Potsdam-based, they have a loyal following in the Ogdensburg.”

Double Axel will play from 5 to 8 p.m.

“I just hope everybody comes out to listen to music, and enjoy some food and drinks,” McNamara.

At 8 p.m. a fireworks display will be held.

Fireworks will be shot off from Lighthouse Point, so spectators are asked not to congregate near the Fort La Presentation land.

“For safe viewing, we are asking people to watch from the Greenbelt area, Lockwood Center or on the south side of Main Street,” McNamara said.

A booth will be set up with information for cab rides home for those who drink too much or those just looking for a ride home.

“A lot of people just walk down to the event,” Pearson said.

Vendor spaces and sponsorships are available by contacting 393-3620, chamber@gisco.net, or www.facebook.com/ogdensburgny.

Proceeds fro the event benefit the chamber.
