Ogdensburg's 'River Shiver' begins Feb. 14; polar bear plunge, ice fishing derby, 5k run, battle reenactment planned

OGDENSBURG -- The Ogdensburg Chamber of Commerce River Shiver is right around the corner, planned for Feb. 14 to Feb. 24.

Highlights will include the “Battle of the Bay” ice fishing derby, polar bear 5k, polar bear plunge, a Battle of Ogdensburg reenactment and a “Snolf” snow golf tournament.

The “Battle of the Bay” derby will be held Feb. 16 from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Wheathouse Bay. Early registration, which ends Feb. 8, will be $25, with late registration costing $30 for adults and $10 for kids under the age of 15. Hourly prizes for the biggest fish, walleye or northern pike first, second and third places will be awarded. An after party and award ceremony will be held at Howie’s, with a $500 prize for the biggest pike and another $500 going to the fisherman who catches the biggest walleye. Registration forms are available at Howie’s and the chamber office or through email from howiesicederby@yahoo.com. All proceeds will benefit the Wounded Warriors and the Ogdensburg Volunteer Rescue Squad.

Also on Feb. 16, the polar bear 5k walk and run will be held at the Maple City Trail and is sponsored by the area Lion’s Clubs. Early registration is $15, by Feb. 8. Day of registration will be $18 and begins at 9 a.m. at the Dobisky Visitor’s Center. Registration forms are available at the Medicine Place or the chamber office. Long sleeve tees will be available to pre-registrants and as supplies last on race day. The race itself will begin at 10 a.m.

The popular Polar Bear Plunge will also be held Feb. 16 at the municipal marina, 100 Riverside Ave. Registration will begin at 11:30 a.m., with the jump at 1 p.m. A costume contest will be held, and the person who brings in the most pledges will win 10 percent of the purse. A hot tub, hot food and hot showers will be available after the plunge. Door prizes and raffles will also be held. The minimum pledge is $35. All proceeds will benefit the Ogdensburg Volunteer Rescue Squad and the chamber. Registration forms are available at local banks, the Medicine Place, Phillips’ Diner, the chamber office or at ogdensburgny.com.

Wrapping up the Feb. 16 activities will be a polar bear art activity for the younger River Shiver participants. The activity will be based on Eric Carley’s illustrations in “Polar Bear, Polar Bear What Do You Hear?” All ages are welcome to join in at the Ogdensburg Public Library from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.

A Rock-N-Skate will be held at Lockwood Arena Feb. 16. Kindergartners through sixth graders can skate for free from 5 to 7 p.m., followed by seventh through twelfth graders from 7 to 9 p.m. Rental skates will be available for $3.

A cabin fever picnic will be held at the Knights of Columbus Feb. 21 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Oven fried chicken, potato salad, cole slaw and strawberry shortcake will be served.

History buffs will want to take in the Battle of Ogdensburg reenactment, which will span several days of River Shiver festivities. The battle will start Feb. 23 with a flag raising ceremony at the Dobisky Visitors’ Center at 1 p.m., followed by a reenactment downtown at 2 p.m. The battle will continue at Lighthouse Point Feb. 24 at 2 p.m.

Also on tap for Feb. 23 is a performance by the Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry Highland Bagpipe Band at Ogdensburg Public Library a 3 p.m. The Winter Ball, an English country dance, will be held at the Ogdensburg Amvets at 7 p.m., Feb. 23.

Feb. 24 will also include a wreath laying ceremony at Sheriff York’s grave in Ogdensburg Cemetery at 11 a.m.

The “Snolf” snow golf tournament will round out the River Shiver activities Feb. 23 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The tournament will be held at the Knight of Columbus and Father Martin Field to support the St. Lawrence Valley SPCA. Prizes for the best team will be given out, along with door prizes. A putting contest will also be held. A DJ will entertain and food will be served.

Also on Feb. 24 will be the “Rediscovering your Backyard” bridal expo from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The expo will be held at 120 Commerce Park Drive and will be sponsored by the Ogdensburg Zonta Club.
