OGDENSBURG - War in the North Country will be featured in local history exhibits at the War of 1812 Heritage Talks April 26-27 at the Freight House Restaurant in Ogdensburg.
Participants in the Fort La Présentation Association event can expect colorful accounts of military action on the water and shoreline of the New York stretch of the St. Lawrence River.
The exhibits will add an important dimension to the broader history explored by the eight speakers from the US and Canada.
"It is a cliché to say history happened here, but that is exactly what we bring to the public," said Barbara O’Keefe, president of the Fort La Présentation Association. "The heritage talks are an opportunity for local history buffs to immerse themselves in their history while learning about related issues further afield."
Tabletop displays are coming from Potsdam, Gouverneur, Sackets Harbor and other North Country museums and heritage organizations. More are expected to attend or send their promotional materials for distribution.
"As part of the heritage mix, Black River author Hope Marston is coming with her new book, Sackets Harbor Powder Monkey: The War of 1812, for young readers," said Mrs. O’Keefe. "We hope we have something for all interests and a great opportunity for history-minded people to pickup and exchange ideas."
The general fee of $80 to attend the War of 1812 Heritage Talks on Saturday, April 27 includes the eight seminars by established historians, a continental breakfast and a buffet lunch. For students and municipal historians the discounted fee is $60.
A meet and greet for speakers and participants the evening of Friday, April 26 is $10. Refreshments will be available.
The War of 1812 Heritage Talks has a Facebook page and is detailed at www.fort1749.org. Participants must register in advance and can do so online or by mail.
