Ogdensburg school now has online archive for school performances

OGDENSBURG -- The Ogdensburg City School District has created an online audio visual archive containing footage from recent school performances.

An update on the archive was the centerpiece of a presentation by district Audio Visual and Ed. Tech Coordinator Robert Ladouceur at Monday's Board of Education meeting.

The archive currently includes performances from the district's recent winter concert season as well as the Ogdensburg Free Academy Drama Club's early December production of the musical "Zombie Prom."

Ladouceur credited Ensemble Video software and the use of server space provided by BOCES as key factors leading to the creation of the archive.

Ensemble Video, a video content management system designed for education, government, healthcare and enterprise markets, grew out of a project at Syracuse University's Whitman School of Management in 2007.

"Ensemble is basically a program that allows us to store all of our video content off of our server, we take up BOCES' space with our videos and they are stored on Ensemble in the cloud," Ladouceur said.

The videos are then linked to the archive on the school district's website and can be accessed from a variety of computers, tablets, phones and other devices.

Ladouceur also noted that streaming the videos takes up little space on electronic devices, allowing viewers to enjoy the footage without encountering many buffering problems and delays.

Also discussed was the possibility of live streaming this year's Ogdensburg Free Academy graduation.

"We are going to explore the possibility of live streaming graduation this year and that is a big, big deal," Ladouceur said.

When asked by the board about the capability of live streaming sporting events, Ladouceur was hesitant to make any promises.

"A lot of other people are filming sports right now and if someone gets me that recording I can put it up on the site," he said, while also noting that there would be a cost associated with live streaming events.

The district is currently using a free version of the Ensemble Video software through BOCES for the 2016-17 school year as part of a testing phase.

In order to continue using the software beyond the end of the school year, one more school in the BOCES district will be required to begin using the software along with Ogdensburg as part of a Cooperative Service (CoSer).

Ladouceur is hopeful that another district can be convinced of the possibilities and benefits that come with Ensemble.

"It doesn't necessarily have to just be for music performances or sporting performances, it could be something a teacher in a class could use to videotape a lesson and house it there and on their own page on our website," he said.

Ladouceur's entire presentation was also displayed on an eye-catching Clear Touch Interactive panel that seemed more suited for the set of ESPN's "Sportscenter" than a school cafeteria.

Featuring its own mobile base for easy transport and up to four separate touch screen zones, the unit also tilts to a "table-top" position to enable easy access to students and educators, which Ladouceur eagerly demonstrated to the board and administration.

District Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction, Assessment and Technology Kevin Kendall reported that the district has purchased three Clear Touch panels, with one shared between the OFA Middle School and High School as well as units at both Kennedy and Madill Elementary Schools.

It was also reported that all three schools in the district are now fully equipped with wireless internet capability.
