Ogdensburg, Lisbon, Waddington, Canton, Potsdam, Madrid and Gouverneur teams expected at Relay for Life event

OGDENSBURG -- Teams from Ogdensburg, Lisbon, Waddington, Canton, Potsdam, Madrid and Gouverneur are among 27 teams expected at the ninth Ogdensburg Relay for Life June 20, which this year will be at Madill Elementary.

The group’s goal is to raise $70,000 for the American Cancer Society, which would surpass last year’s $65,000. Over nine years, the teams have raised a total of $700,000.

Teams can still sign up at www.relayforlife.org/ogdensburgny.

Relay officials are planning a full slate of events.

Teams can start setting up at 10 a.m. St. John’s Episcopal Church will host a survivor’s reception in the Madill cafeteria, with survivor’s t-shirt pick up also at that time.

Team captains will register at 3 p.m. DJs Matt George and Dave Merz will provide music from then until midnight.

Teams will parade at 3 p.m., with Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center offering education at their site.

Opening ceremonies start at 4 p.m. Shannon Tooley and Jocelyn Fifield will sing the national anthem. Sam Lamacchia will be the honor speaker. Survivor’s and caregiver’s laps will follow.

BOCES cosmetology students and professionals from The Cutting Edge will offer hair extensions starting at 4:30 p.m.

At 5 p.m., there ill be a crazy hat contest and food.

Other events include a dunking booth hosted by one of the teams and raffles.

The teams will sell luminary bags for $5. People buy one and write the name of a loved one who died of cancer and they will be lit at 10 p.m. Those attending will be asked to donate canned goods which will anchor the bags and then be donated to St. John’s food pantry.

Saturday will include a 2 p.m. survivor’s reception.
