OGDENSBURG -- The Ogdensburg Area Zonta Club will be hosting a "Free The Girls" 5K walk/run on Saturday, May 17 at the Dobisky Visitors. Registration starts at 9 a.m. with a 10 a.m. race time.
The event is a drive to collect gently-used bras to donate to women and girls rescued from sex trafficking. In other countries, second-hand clothing sales is a profitable venture - women and girls can make three to five times their community’s minimum wage from bra sales.
When registering, participants will pick a level of support. At the $5 donation level, participants will agree to wear their gently-used bra donation on the outside of their race shirt during the event and deposit it at the end. The $10 donation level is for participants that don’t want to run wearing their donation, but will give one to support the cause. With a $15 donation, participants do not bring a bra but will be making the donation to help with postage when mailing the bras.
Call 355-1363 or email flackmelanie@yahoo.com for more information or to get a registration form. Completed forms can be mailed to Ogdensburg Area Zonta, PO Box 1223, Ogdensburg, NY 13669. Checks can be made payable to Ogdensburg Area Zonta Club. Pre-register to receive a door prize.
