CANTON -- The Remington Arts Festival Oct. 1-4 will again celebrate the life and history of Canton native Frederic Remington who was a famous painter, sculptor illustrator and writer.

The festival, started as a remembrance of the life of Remington, includes a birthday celebration and tour of his birthplace, a 5K run, art exhibit, children’s games, art competitions and live music.

The festival will also feature free horse-drawn carriage historical tours 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday from the Village Green.

“The tour goes through downtown and highlights important places to Mr. Remington including his birthplace,” according to event coordinater Lenore VanderZee.

She said local middle and high school students volunteer to narrate the tours.

An opening party celebration is slated for Thursday, Oct. 1, at TAUNY, 53 Main St., from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

“There will be people dressed up as Mr. Remington and his wife Eva,” VanderZee said.

The event will also include an art show and sale, a 5K, live music and competitions Oct. 1 through Oct. 4.

The art show and sale will be held in the Village Green, corner of East Main and Park streets from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. All events are free.

"We have approximately 30 fine arts and handcraft vendors who will be displaying and selling their wares," according to executive director Suzy McBroom.

She says vendors include sterling silver jewelry, stoneware pottery, hand-woven scarves and hand-painted silk. All of the vendors are from Northern New York.

"We always host the event during St. Lawrence University’s family weekend so there should be a good crowd," McBroom said.

There will be children’s toys and games at the St. Lawrence Historical Association, 3 Main St., from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m.

“The historical association will have toys that Remington would have used during his lifetime, and costumes to dress up in,” VanderZee said.

Live music in the park will fill the air from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Nature’s Storehouse will offer free Henna tattoos.

A K-12 student art competition featuring works from students from all across St. Lawrence County is planned at TAUNY, 53 Main St., from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Awards will be held from noon to 1 p.m.

A 5K historic fun run/walk will be held Oct. 4. Register at University plaza t 8 a.m. for $10. The first 45 to register are guaranteed a free t-shirt. Walkers will start at 8:45 a.m. and runners at 9 a.m.

The event will include live music and a birthday cake for Remington.
