NORWOOD -- The Norwood Village Green Concert Series will present The Taffeta Girls on Sunday, July 9, at 6 p.m.

Now performing for their 10th season, Taffeta Girls performs“Girl Group’ music of the 1950’s and 1960’s. There are three Taffeta Girls and they are accompanied by a three-member band.

The Taffeta Girls were part of the cast of the musical of the same name, produced by Community Performance Series several years ago. The Taffetas are Carina Gilchrist, Laura Fitzsimons Gilbert and Meaghan Janovsky.

Carina Gilchrist grew up in Madrid and moved to Norwood two years ago. Carina has enjoyed performing for various events throughout her whole life. Starring as Patsy in the Community Performance Series performance of “Always Patsy Cline” and the next year in “The Taffetas,” she developed a love for music from the 50’s and formed long-time friendships with her co-stars.

Laura Fitzsimons Gilbert is a lifelong Potsdam resident. She completed both her undergraduate and graduate degrees at The Crane School of Music majoring in music education (voice), and has been the K-12 vocal music teacher at Morristown Central School for 8 years. In the past you may have seen her performing locally as a back-up singer with bluesman Tas Cru, in the CPS performance of “The Taffetas,” or performing at many weddings and special events.

Meaghan Janovsky has spent most of her life either working in an entertainment industry or working with children. Currently, by day she is a 5th grade teacher at Nightengale Elementary. By night she is the crazy choreographer/dance teacher that you will see running around Tap to Toe. Meaghan worked extensively with Community Performance Series in Potsdam for over 10 years, and has also done a small amount of blues recording with Tas Cru and the Slow Happy Boys as well as doing some local performing with the band. She also had the opportunity to perform at Syracuse and Chenango blues festivals as part of the Stacked Deck singers.

Admission is free but there is a “pass the bucket.” The Series is supported in part by the state Council on the Arts, a state agency.

The series continues to take donations by check. They can be mailed to: Norwood Village Green Concert Series, 3 Bicknell St., Norwood 13668.
