Bob Shelly will perform magic tricks at Norwood Village Green Sunday

NORWOOD - The Norwood Village Green Concert series has another busy week as it presents the annual Children's Festival July 1 and the All Star Big Band with special guest Wayne Bergeron July 5.

Nationally acclaimed trumpeter Wayne Bergeron will perform as a guest artist with the All Star Big Band under the direction of Wally Siebel Thursday, July 5 at 7 p.m.

Wayne Bergeron was born in 1958 in Hartford, Connecticut. He grew up in Southern California where he started on French horn before switching to trumpet. Although a difficult instrument to play, Bergeron took to the trumpet quickly.

“I found I had natural ability for playing the trumpet in the upper register at an early age.”

Bergeron credits his junior high school band director and first trumpet teacher, Ron Savitt, for molding his natural abilities into practical working skills.

Bergeron is featured on a number of television shows and movies spanning from The Simpsons to Star Trek.

For this concert the All star Big Band under the direction of Wally Siebel will be joined by master and current drummer for the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, John Riley, who also comes with a resume full of credits.

The Children’s Festival will be held at the Village Green Sunday, July 1 at 5 p.m. with a storytelling workshop in the municipal building and then continues with the unique tale from "The Storycrafters" on the band shell at 6 p.m.

Barry Marshall, and Jeri Burns, PhD have been working together as The Storycrafters since 1991, and have been storytellers for even longer. In addition to being nationally renowned storytellers, they are award-winning radio show hosts, recording artists and writers.

Marshall and Burns strive to honor world cultures by telling the old stories in respectful ways, often integrating the musical instruments, songs or dances indigenous to particular regions. They also tell original modern renditions of stories.

At 7 p.m. the outdoor performances will continue with the magic of Bob Shelley, and at 8 p.m. Stephen Gratto will perform physical comedy, juggling and balancing.

Bob Shelley’s magical entertainment is designed for all ages and lots of audience participation. Among the highlights of his career have included performances with Bob Hope and Johnny Carson.

In another life Stephen Gratto is high school principal for Northeastern Clinton Central School in Champlain.

His past career in education found him teaching science, and much of his physical comedy is based on his knowledge of that discipline. Stephen Gratto previously performed for the concert series in 2005.
