Communities across the North Country will commemorate Independence Day and celebrate summer with fireworks, parades and other events.

Parades will be held in Norwood and Morristown, while fireworks displays will light up the night sky throughout the weekend in Norwood, Hannawa Falls, Massena, Hogansburg, Morristown, Gouverneur and Alexandria Bay.

Norwood Field Days

The 76th Annual Norwood Fire Department Field Day events begin Sunday, July 3 on the Village Green with a free performance by the Norwood Brass Firemen from 7 to 9 p.m.

During the concert, games of chance, food and legal beverages will be offered at the Fire Hall, along with novelties and activities for kids in the park with Cubby T. Clown and Co.

From 9 p.m. to 1 a.m., local rock-n-rollers Six Foot Midget will play the traditional block dance in front of the Fire Hall. A $2 admission will be charged at the gate.

On Monday, July 4, a huge parade is scheduled to step off at 1 p.m. sharp. Lining up at noon on Maple Street, this parade progresses down Spring Street and ends at the Morgan Street Firemen’s Field. This 60- to 70-unit parade will consist of four marching bands, over 16 fire departments and rescue squads, more than 25 floats, and antique cars and trucks. Youth and church groups along with many civic and area businesses help to support this one-hour parade. Last year’s parade was viewed by over 5,000 people.

The parade theme is “Carnival Fun”. There will be 61 U.S. flags displayed along the parade route.

Thirty minutes before parade time the Norwood Firemen have over 850 8”x12” hand-held American flags to share with parade watchers. When a donation of any size is placed into the fireman’s boot, the viewer will be given a flag to wave during the parade.

Cubby T. Clown and Co. will also offer face painting and animal balloon sculpturing before and during the parade at the Village Green. Plaque for parade awards, donated by Hometown Café, will be given out.

Following the parade, festivities at the firemen’s field start with a demolition derby and garden tractor races at 2 p.m. These tractors reach speeds up to 50 miles per hour. There will also be a Water Ball competition for the volunteer firemen.

Visits with Cubby T. and Cuddles will be on-going all afternoon. Two free live shows from Cubby T. Clown and Co. will be take play at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. A Five in One Children’s Playhouse will also be part of the entertainment.
