Local favorites the Brass Firemen will perform at the Norwood Village Green concert series Thursday, July 27, at 7 p.m.

NORWOOD – The next two upcoming Norwood Village Green Concert Series performances will be by the Waydown Wailers Sunday, July 23, at 6 p.m. and the Norwood Brass Firemen Thursday, July 27, at 7 p.m.

The Waydown Wailers play a blend of original roots rock, blues rock, and jam with a healthy dash of country they label as "Outlaw Americana."

The local band features unique resonance defined by rock-hard lyrics, great musicianship, and hand-clapping, foot-stomping melodies. Everything they create brands the consciousness, said a concert series press release.

The band is comprised of brothers Dave (lead guitar/vocals) and Christian Parker (guitar), Michael Scriminger (drums/percussion) and Connor Pelkey (bass backing vocals).

To date the band has recorded two albums featuring much of their original material, “Empty Promises” and “State of the Union.”

Norwood’s own Brass Firemen will take the stage on Thursday, July 27, at 7 p.m.

The roots of the Brass Firemen go back to the Incorporation of the Village of Norwood in 1872. From that time until the Second World War it was known as The Norwood Band.

In 1946, the band became associated with the Norwood Fire Department and was known as the Norwood Fire Department Band. Fred Morgan was the manager from 1946-1977. Fred is considered the “father” of the band and managed the band for 31 years.

In the early 1970’s the band made its first recording entitled “Brass Firemen.”

Over the years that name evolved as its calling card.

Admission to both concerts is free but there is a “pass the bucket.”

The Series is supported in part by the New York State Council on the Arts, a state agency. Its primary support is from many organizations, foundations, businesses and individuals.
