POTSDAM -- The Northern Symphonic Winds will take the stage at Hosmer Hall, SUNY Posdam, on Friday, Feb. 12, at 7:30 p.m., to perform their annual winter concert.
Under the direction of Brian Doyle, NSW begins with “Florentiner March.” Subtitled “Grande Marcia Italiana,” an international survey placed this particular piece as composer Julius Fučik's most popular
After the opening, Frank Ticheli’s “Sanctuary” offers a tribute intended to reflect the composer’s respect and admiration for his former teacher and mentor, H. Robert Reynolds.
“Masquerade” by Vincent Persichetti, is a set of 10 variations on a theme. One of the major figures in American music of the 20th century, Persichetti was highly regarded both as a teacher and a composer. He was also one of the major composers for the concert wind band repertoire, with his 14 works for the ensemble.
The second half of the concert begins with Richard Strauss’ popular and delightful “Till Eulenspiegels Merry Pranks.” NSW ends the concert with Joseph Spaniola’s “Escapade,” which dips into funk and jazz idioms as part of this engaging finale.
Founded in 1998, Northern Symphonic Winds is a 55-piece wind and percussion ensemble comprised of faculty from The Crane School of Music, northern New York music teachers and other professionals, and selected Crane students.
Tickets for the performance are available at Brick & Mortar Music and at the door and are $10 for adults, $5 for seniors and students will be admitted free of charge.
