The work of the county’s Office for the Aging and the impact low wage work has on health will be examined on North Country Matters Monday and Tuesday, Jan. 12 and 13 on WCKN, Time Warner Digital Channel 30

The first show, at 7:30 p.m. both nights, is with county Office for the Aging Director Andrea Montgomery.

According to 2013 US Census figures, 15 percent of the county population is 65 or older. The county office serves 22,000 seniors, age 60 or older.

Montgomery discuses key issues for seniors like housing, transportation, medical care, poverty, employment, safe housing, and caregiving. The county offers a broad menu of services for seniors that helps them stay in their own homes, make medical appointments, and receive other essential and social services.

The second show, at 8 p.m., is with Occupational Health Clinical Center of the North Country Project Manager Jeanette Zoeckler, out of the Syracuse office. That show is on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c7V5_9DLHYE.

The Occupational Health Clinical Center serves a 26-county area in New York State, including the North Country with a clinic in Canton. Under discussion is the first phase of a major study on the health of low-wage workers undertaken by Upstate Medical University in Syracuse. This study focused on the health effects of low wage jobs on workers in the Syracuse area, but it reflects trends nationally, as well as what is happening in the OHCC’s service area.

North Country Matters is a local public affairs video magazine produced by WCKN under the direction of Dan Dullea of the Center of Excellence in Communication at Clarkson University. The NCM civic partners working to educate North Country residents about critical public policy issues facing our region include AAUW-St. Lawrence County, the League of Women Voters of St. Lawrence County, and Clarkson Media and Mass Communication students, who provide the technical expertise for the productions.

In addition to local broadcasts, the shows are also available on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/user/danieledullea.
