Registration for the second annual North Country Jr. Iron Chef competition will open Nov. 1.
Registration opens Nov. 1, with one middle- and one high-school team accepted per school district/organization until Dec. 2, after which any remaining spots will be filled. The competition is limited to 18 teams in each section.
“We are so excited to build on the success of the first competition and get kids cooking again,” says Sarah Bentley-Garfinkel, school program director at the Health Initiative.
The regional event pits teams of middle and high school students from St. Lawrence, Clinton, Essex, Franklin, Hamilton, Jefferson and Lewis counties against one another. Teams develop healthy recipes using a combination of local and USDA/commodity foods that could be realistically prepared in a school cafeteria.
The competition will be Saturday March 8, 2014 at AA Kingston Middle School in Potsdam.
Recipes will be posted on the event website and shared with school cafeteria staff throughout the region.
Teams can be formed within schools, youth clubs, churches, after school programs or friends.
One middle- and one high-school team will be accepted per school district or organization. Registration will close Dec. 2.
