POTSDAM -- The North Country Children's Museum presents “DNA Science” workshop Saturday, Dec. 17 from 12:30 until 2 p.m. with Cintia Hongay, assistant professor of biology at Clarkson University, at the University Bookstore, 39 Market St.
Attendees will learn how to isolate human genomic DNA and create DNA necklaces to wear.
Children will extract DNA by lysing their cheek cell sample (swab), then watch as wispy white strands of their own DNA precipitate out of a solution containing ethanol.
After transferring DNA to plastic microcentrifuge tubes, kids will fashion tubes into DNA pendant necklaces using colorful strings.
Ages five and older welcome.
Ages five to seven may need parental assistance and supervision.
Older kids can do this activity on their own, with the instructions given during the activity.
The cost is $10 per participant.
