POTSDAM -- The New Horizons Bands of Northern NY Inc. presents its “Swing Band,” on the Main Stage of Market Street in downtown Potsdam during Summer Festival at 5 p.m. on Thursday, July 12.

The Swing Band, a group of 23, will play old Big Band favorites such as “It Don’t Mean a Thing If It Ain’t Got That Swing,” “Basin Street Blues,” “Take the ‘A’ Train,” “Georgia On My Mind,” “Secret Love,” and “Perfidia.” Also on the program are the classics, “Sweet Georgia Brown,” “All of Me,” and the Dave Brubeck hit, “Take Five.” More recent compositions include “Rock This Town” and “Free Bird.”

New Horizons Music programs provide entry points to music making for adults, including those with no musical experience at all and those who were active in school music programs but have been inactive for a long period.

In keeping with the New Horizons International Music Association’s philosophy, the Swing Band is “inclusive rather than exclusive; there are no auditions.” “Every person has musical potential that can be developed to a level that will be personally rewarding,” said a press release from the organization.

The Swing Band, directed by Theresa Witmer, is an off-shoot of the New Horizons Bands of Northern New York’s full band program, which performs during the Summer Festival on Saturday, July 14 at 11 a.m. in Ives Park under director Ron Berry.

In case of rain, the concert will be held at the Potsdam High School auditorium.
