POTSDAM -- Community Performance Series will present the taping of the National Public Radio broadcast of "From the Top," a weekly showcase for young musicians, 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 21 in Hosmer Concert Hall at SUNY Potsdam.

Hosted by acclaimed pianist Christopher O'Riley, each one-hour broadcast of "From the Top" presents five high-caliber performances along with interviews, sketches and games, revealing the heart and soul behind extraordinary young musicians. Now in its twelfth year, "From the Top" is taped before live audiences in concert halls from Boston to Honolulu.

The Potsdam "From the Top" broadcast will feature John Lee, cello, 17, Basking Ridge, N.J., performing "Dance of the Green Devil," accompanied by O'Riley on piano; Avery Gagliano, piano, 10, Washington, D.C., performing "The Cat and the Mouse" by Aaron Copland; Jieming Tang, violin, 14, Cleveland, Ohio, performing a work by Schubert or Tchaikovsky, accompanied by O'Riley; and Margaux Filet, flute, 18, Davis, Calif., performing "Cantabile" by George Enescu, accompanied by O'Riley.

Also appearing will be the Al Dente String Quartet, including Adé Williams, violin; Claire Bourg, violin; Caitlin Adamson, viola, and Tara Safavi, cello.

"From the Top" music producer Tom Vignieri will present a pre-concert lecture at 6:30 p.m. immediately before the show.

"From the Top” airs Sundays at 4 p.m. on North Country Public Radio. The episode recorded in Potsdam will air nationally the week of May 21 and on NCPR May 27.

Broadcast on over 200 stations nationwide to an audience of nearly 700,000 listeners each week, "From the Top" has been described by the Boston Globe as "an entertaining, accessible and inspirational mix of outstanding musical performances, informal interviews, skits and games; the show is a celebration of extraordinary musicians who happen to be teenagers leading fairly normal lives."

In conjunction with the Potsdam broadcast, CPS is launching the "Musical Memory" Photo Contest through the organization's Facebook page. CPS invites people of all ages to celebrate musical experiences from their youth and submit their favorite musical photo from their childhood, along with a description.

The person with the most votes at the end of the contest will receive two tickets to the "From the Top" performance and the opportunity to display their photograph at the concert. The contest runs through Sunday, April 8 at 7 p.m. Visit www.facebook.com/cpspotsdam to enter.
