SOUTH COLTON -- The Town of Colton will celebrate its glacial and cultural landmark Sunday Rock on Sunday, Oct. 30.

The celebration will include a new delicacy: Sunday Rock chocolate.

A new national marker is being placed at the town’s Sunday Rock Park along State Highway 56 just north of the hamlet of South Colton.

The marker signifying Sunday Rock is now listed on both the State and National Registers of Historic Places. It will let motorists, bicyclists, and others traveling State Highway 56 know about Sunday Rock’s importance to local citizens as well as to the region. Historically Sunday Rock is recognized as a gateway to the “Great South Woods” and the Adirondacks. Today many people rest and picnic in the park while enjoying the fields and woods surrounding the park.

Town Supervisor Lawrence Patzwald will lead the dedication ceremony which begins at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, October 30. The official unveiling of the marker will be done by keepers of Sunday Rock including Sally Thomas and her son Rodney who both live nearby.

Others attending will include community members and representatives of organizations who value Sunday Rock. In 2010 the organization, Traditional Arts in Upstate New York headquartered in Canton, recognized Sunday Rock as a cultural landmark in Northern New York by placing it on its Register of Very Special Places.

Following the dedication event a reception will be held at the Raquette River Information Center in South Colton just south of Sunday Rock Park across the highway from the South Colton Post Office. During the reception the town will kick off a new fundraising effort to help maintain Sunday Rock Park and keep the story of Sunday Rock alive. St. Lawrence Chocolates in Potsdam has created a new delicacy for the town – a nutty (peanut) caramel Sunday Rock Chocolate – which will be available to sample and to purchase in 4-piece boxes for $5.

Forms also are available at the Town Office and from the Town of Colton Tourism & Beautification Committee to place orders for upcoming holidays. The family that owns and operates St. Lawrence Chocolates has connections to Colton and their creations, including Sunday Rock Chocolates, are named for places in the North Country.

For more details about the Sunday Rock event and chocolates contact the town’s coordinators of tourism and beautification, Ruth McWilliams at 262-2450 (ruth@catamountlodge.com) and Laurie Thornton at 265-5762 (ziplid@twcny.rr.com).
