Music Friday, Saturday, Sunday at annual Madrid Bluegrass Festival

MADRID – The Madrid Bluegrass Festival is back for another weekend of great bluegrass music Friday, Saturday and Sunday, June 25-27, with a few events The Atkinson FamilyThe Atkinson Familypreceding the music festival.

Featured musical guests this year are internationally renowned Amy Gallatin and Stillwaters.

They will join Remington Ryde, Acoustic Blue and some old favorites, Delaney Brothers, Atkinson Family, Spare Change, Donnie Perkins Family, The Old Barn Boys, Pat Ashley, Generation Gap and the Madrid Gospel Group.

Campers have already begun arriving at the park by the Grasse River, and many like to arrive by Wednesday to be ready for the annual ice cream social that evening at 7 p.m., sponsored by the United Church of Madrid and featuring the renowned Norwood Brass Fireman.

On Thursday evening, a spaghetti dinner starts at 4:30 p.m. in the community hall in the park.

Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday the Madrid Library will hold a used book sale at the park. All proceeds benefit Madrid Library.

Starting Friday, it’s all bluegrass. The bands are on stage at 2:10 p.m., continuing into the evening, and followed by a country music dance in the community building at 9 p.m. Concessions run from 5 to 11 p.m. that day also.

Also check the concert schedule for several instrument workshops, where you can learn about the fiddle, dobro, mandolin, banjo and songwriting.

On Saturday, there will be lots of music, food, fireworks at night, and a foot-race in the morning to get things going.

In the morning, the 15th annual Madrid Bluegrass Ramble, which includes half marathon and 10K runs and a 5K run/walk, begin with registration at 7 a.m. at the Madrid Library. All festival folks wearing a full weekend wristband join the ramble at half price. Ramble Runners get half price admission to the Festival Saturday. Back at the community building, they will be gearing up for the annual chicken BBQ at noon.

A full 12 hours of bluegrass music is set to begin at 10 a.m. Saturday. A guitar donated by Dave Nichols/Custom Pearl Inlay will be auctioned off. At the end of the show Saturday several lottery ticket door prizes are given away. The fireworks display will take place at 10 p.m.

Sunday morning provides an “all you can eat” breakfast starting at 8 a.m., followed by the Madrid Gospel Group’s traditional performance at 9 a.m. A wristband is not required for breakfast but is required for the gospel music.

Bluegrass music continues until 4:30 p.m. Sunday.

Other attractions during the weekend include the 10th annual children’s fishing derby, a large playground, crafters, food concession, raffles, and more.

A full weekend admission is $28 US. For Friday only it’s $8; Saturday only, $16; Sunday only, $10. Children 12 and under are admitted for free if they are accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Rough camping is $6 per night.
