CANTON -- SUNY Canton will bring the legendary music of Motown to campus when the tribute group "Sounds of the Motor City" performs at noon on Wednesday, Feb. 10, in the Richard W. Miller Campus Center's Underground Lounge.

The event, sponsored by the Office of Diversity Affairs, is free and open to the public.

"Sounds of the Motor City" will perform classic songs from renowned artists such as Jackie Wilson; Otis Redding; Isaac Hayes; Earth, Wind and Fire; and the Godfather of Soul, James Brown.

The group's members have previously appeared on Broadway in musicals such as "Aladdin," "Smokey Joe's Café," "West Side Story," and "Sophisticated Ladies." They have also performed with iconic bands such as The Drifters and The Platters.

"It will be an exciting experience for our students," said SUNY Canton's Director of Diversity Affairs Lashawanda Ingram. "It will also be educational because students will learn about the history of Motown and how it contributed to America's cultural evolution."

Ingram said that the college specifically sought out a musical group that would promote diversity and teach students a bit of history at the same time.
