OGDENSBURG -- Joe McDonald will present a lecture on Morristown-born artist Charles S. Chapman at the Art Highlight and Tea Series Saturday, April 14 at 2 p.m. at the Frederic Remington Art Museum, 303 Washington St.

McDonald will detail the life and work of Morristown’s most famous artist, a descendant of the family that founded the town four generations before him.

Chapman was born in Morristown in 1879, graduated from the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, and then settled in Leonia, NJ, a town known as an art community.  

He worked as an illustrator for New York City publishers of magazines and books and established a following as an artist working in oil, watercolor, “water oils” and lithographs.  Chapman is widely known for his landscape works based on nature.   Chapman would summer in Morristown at the family home painting local scenes and portraits and teaching art classes near the waters of the St. Lawrence.  

During his career, he became nationally known and honored as a member of the National Academy of Design. Don’t miss the unveiling of the Museum’s newest acquisition, Chapman’s “Nude on a Beach.”  

Tea will be served following the lecture at 3 p.m. The menu will include cucumber and cream cheese sandwiches on whole wheat bread, chicken salad served on lettuce with French bread, endive leaf with sour cream and smoked salmon, seasonal fruit salad, desserts and tea, coffee, or lemonade.  Fee for the tea is $10 for museum members and $12 for non-members.
