Veterans organizations from the Massena area will be hold a parade on Memorial Day from 11:20-11:45 a.m. VFW, American Legion and AMVETS members will start their procession at Sacred Heart Church, 212 Main St., march up Main Street, then turn onto Andrews Street to Veteran’s Park, where a short ceremony will be held.

The Massena Volunteer Emergency Unit is hosting its 43rd annual radiothon on Memorial Day, from 11 a.m.-4 p.m.

The organization invites the public to attend the event.

A meal and refreshments will be available, and games and activities, with prizes, for children will be offered.

Raffles and a silent auction will be staged.

The Seaway Valley Venom Football team will provide some childrens activities as well.

Potsdam

Members of the Potsdam VFW Post 1194, 95 Market St., will visit cemeteries in the area on Memorial Day Weekend to place flags on the gravesites of departed veterans. Members of the community visiting the cemeteries over the weekend at the same time are encouraged to identify veteran gravesites for post members laying flags.

A parade, organized by the post will step off from the Potsdam High School at 9 a.m. on Memorial Day, Monday, May 29. The procession, with members from the Potsdam, West Potsdam and Hanawa fire departments, local Girl Scouts, school band, and the local chapter of the Disabled American Veterans, will march down Cottage Street and onto Market Street to Ives Park were a ceremony will be held.

In Ives Park, a prayer will be said by the Rev. Stephen Rocker, speeches will be given by village officials, a 21-gun salute salvoed and a wreath laid at the veteran’s monument there.

The post will also place wreathes at Bayside, Garfield, St. Mary’s and Southville cemeteries over the weekend.

Ogdensburg

The Ogdensburg Memorial Day parade will start at 10 a.m. in library park.

The procession, made up of color guards and members of Ogdensburg VFW, AMVETS and American Legion, will then march up State Street to the Ogdensburg Cemetery.

At the cemetery, cermonies will be held at the veterans plots there and a gun salute with be salvoed.

There will be soup and sandwiches served at the Ogdensburg AMVETS Post 19, 215 Ford St., following the service at the cemetery.

In the event of rain, the parade will be canceled and the services will take place at the AMVETS post.

Also in Ogdensburg, Kiwanis builders and key clubs will unveil a monument in the Ogdensburg cemetery honoring Revolutionary War veterans who are buried there Memorial Day at 11 a.m.

The public is invited to attend the ceremony.

Canton

The Canton Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1231 will host a Memorial Day ceremony and parade at 10 a.m.

The parade will start at the Canton Reserve Center at 10 a.m. and continue to the bridge. There a wreath ceremony will be held to honor those lost at sea. The parade will then continue to the park where a memorial will be held, including a volley for deceased veterans.

Refreshments will be held at The Club following the ceremony. The public is welcome to attend.

Norwood

The 2017 Norwood Memorial Day Parade will be at 10:45 a.m. with a bridge ceremony.

Those wishing to ride the personnel float should be at the Clark-Robinson Post 68 American Legion located at 10 Maple St. by 10:15 a.m. The parade will continue down Spring Street to the Park at 11am. Local fire departments from Norwood, Norfolk, Potsdam and West Potsdam will be showing support.

The mayor, Norwood-Norfolk High School Band and the Norwood Brass Firemen will also be in attendance. The Post Color Guard Salute will be performed in honor and memory of veterans.

Immediately after, there will be a luncheon available at the Norwood American Legion.

All are welcome.

Tri-Town

The American Legion Post 514 which covers the Tri-Town area will be leading Memorial Day services at several cemeteries.

Post 514 will start with a service at the Winthrop cemetery at 9 a.m., then Fairview at 9:20. Legionnaires plan to proceed from Fairview to Veteran’s Park in Lawrenceville around 10, St. Lawrence cemetery at 10:20, St. Patrick’s at 11 a.m., LBSH senior housing at 11:30, down Main Street Bridge in Brasher Falls at noon, and then finally convene at the post.

Again this year the South Glengary Pipes and Drums from Canada, will participate at all the ceremonies.

The Post asks that if you have a deceased loved one who rests in one of these cemeteries, who is not on their roster for flag placement, to call the Legion at 315-389-9102 and leave a message with their name, rank, and branch of service, era, and cemetery.

Free grave marker flags are available at Post 514.

Nicholville

The Nicholville United Methodist Church, 637 Water St., is hosting it's annual Memorial Day turkey dinner at noon.

Roast turkey, dressing, gravy, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, honeyed fresh herbed carrots, rolls, butter, assorted pies and beverage.

The meal will cost $10 for adults, and $5 for children.

The church is handicapped accessible, and take-outs will be available.

Madrid and Waddington

The Madrid American Legion Post 1513 and Waddington American Legion Post 420 will be leading parades in both communities on Memorial Day.

The parade in Madrid starts at about 9 a.m. on Cross Street, continues up Main Street to conclude at the Madrid Library with a ceremony.

In Waddington, the marchers will begin on St. Lawrence Avenue, proceed on Main Street to finish with a ceremony in the park.

In addition to the two Legion posts, a small band, members of the local rescue squads and fire departments will also march.

After the final ceremony, the Waddington Legion is hosting a chicken barbecue.

Heuvelton

The Heuvelton AMVETS Post 1997 will host a Memorial Day observance May 28 at 1 p.m. at Hillcrest Cemetery and then at Pine Hill Cemetery. A lunch will follow the services.

Lisbon

The Lisbon American Legion Post 1342, 6991 County Route 10, will lead a parade with the high school band at 6 p.m. There will be a service at the post after the parade.

Mass in Canton and DeKalb

Memorial Day Masses in remembrance of fallen servicemen and women will be held in DeKalb Junction and Canton.

Masses will be offered at 3 p.m. at Saint Henry’s Cemetery in DeKalb Junction and at 4 p.m. at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Canton.

Please bring a chair.

In case of rain, there will be one Mass in Saint Mary’s Church at 4 p.m. in Canton.

All are welcome to attend the ceremony to remember family members, friends and neighbors who died for the country.
