MASSENA -- An inaugural meeting to organize events to honor Massena native and Hollywood actor Hal J. Smith for his 100th birthday will be held at The Massena Pubic Library on Oct. 6 at 6:30 p.m.

During the meeting a committee will be formed with a discussion about possible events to celebrate the lifetime accomplishments of one of Massena's most famous faces.

The idea of honoring Smith is being organized by local videographer, writer and historian John D. Michaud III. Michaud was a friend of Smith's and in 2004 compiled a biography book about his life.

"I hope to have many people at the first meeting. I want anybody who knew Hal to attend along with the younger generation who never knew him personally. The time has arrived to honor Hal with some kind of monument," said Michaud. "This project will take a lot of time. Money will have to be raised for the days to honor him forever. I will need as much support from the community as possible for this to become a reality. I feel this event would bring some old fashioned spirit back into Massena. We need more community spirit."

Michaud also plans an honorary advisory committee that will consist of some of Smith's remaining fellow Hollywoood associates. He will be releasing the first celebrity name at the meeting who has agreed to be on the committee.

Smith is known best for the legendary television character of Otis Campbell on The Andy Griffith Show that aired on CBS Television from 1960 -1968. He is also known for creating the voice of Barney Rubble on The Flintstones . He did hundreds of cartoon voices ranging from Winnie The Pooh and Owl, Flintheart Glumgold on Duck Tails, Goofy, Goliath The Dog on Davey and Goliath, Clutch Cargo, Taurus on Space Angel (which is rumored to have inspired Star Trek creator Gene Rodenberry to create engineer Scotty on the television series.)

In August 1964 Massena honored him with Hal Smith Days. The festivities included being inducted as an honorary member of the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe, a class of 1936 reunion, an aluminum crown from the Reynolds Metal Company, a Mayberry jail cell downtown, and a large aluminum check presented to him with signatures of his Massena friends from the Aluminum Company of America.

Smith died in January 1994 at age 77.

His last documented visit to Massena was in 1982 where he spent an afternoon talking about his career at the former Daily Courier-Observer newspaper office.
