Massena Winter Carnival to feature hockey tournament, ‘Family Feud,’ horse-drawn rides, dog sled races Jan. 28

MASSENA – The Massena Winter Carnival will kick off with opening ceremonies and breakfast at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 28 at the Massena Arena Annex along with the second day of the Massena Cup Hockey Tournament.

Lots of children's events will start out the week Saturday, with snowshoe and snow candle lessons for kids at the Robert Moses State Park Nature Center at 9:30 a.m. and children's activities at the Massena Community Center, including horse drawn wagon rides, beginning at 11 a.m.

Events continue that weekend with Kickball Tournaments sponsored by The Ale House beginning at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, and a trivia afternoon at the Massena Elks Club at 1:30 p.m.

Special 'Celebrate Winter' Storytimes will be held for preschoolers at Massena Public Library at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 30 and Thursday, Feb. 2.

A spaghetti dinner and bonfire will be held beginning at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 31 at the Massena Rod and Gun Club.

On Thursday, Feb. 2, a special Family Feud hosted by local radio stations will be held at the Knight of Columbus Hall, with cash prizes awarded beginning at 7 p.m.

Friday, Feb. 3 starts off a weekend filled with events: Winter Carnival Parade at 7 p.m., Main Street, and Fireworks at Bushnell Field at 8 p.m.

Saturday, Feb. 4 includes: Massena Dash-Dog Sled Races 8 a.m., Ladies Day In Craft Show 11 a.m., Horse Drawn Rides all day beginning at 11 a.m. along with children's activities all at the NYPA Hawkins Point Visitors Center; learn to snowshoe or snow candle for kids at the Robert Moses State Park Nature Center at 9:30 a.m., along with a StoryWalk Snowshoe for families; a 5K Walk/Run/Showshoe 8:30 a.m. (Massena Country Club), Wii Bowling & Shuffleboard Tournaments 10 a.m. to noon, Lunch at 1 p.m., Craft Show, Bake Sale & White Elephant Sale 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. all at the Massena Community Center-Massena Senior Citizens Community Center, Co-ed Snow Volleyball Tournament 12:30 p.m. (The Ale House), chicken barbecue at noon (Massena Volunteer Fire Department), Meet & Greet the Mushers Reception 6 p.m. (Dar’s Place), a guided moonlight ski and snowshoe hike at the Nature Center 7 p.m., and karaoke at 9 p.m. (The Village Inn).

Sunday, Feb. 5 will begin with a breakfast 8 a.m. (Knights of Columbus) and the Massena Dash-Dog Sled Races beginning at 8 a.m. (NYPA Hawkins Point Visitors Center), and closing ceremonies at 3 p.m. (NYPA Hawkins Point Visitors Center).
