Massena Winter Carnival continues with 'kids days,' 5K, snow sculptures, fireworks, more

MASSENA -- The Massena Winter Carnival continues through Jan. 26 featuring ice sculptures, a snow maze, fireworks, a parade, “kids days,” a 5k walk and a snow sculpture contest.

The carnival, organized by the Greater Massena Chamber of Commerce, will also feature a photo contest, kickball and volleyball tournaments and snowshoe and cross-country skiing guided tour.

The “Frozen Fun Parade” is going to be in the morning instead of the evening hours as in the past. Originally scheduled to take place Jan. 17, it has been rescheduled for 10 a.m. on Satirday, Jan. 24.

The vendor market is going to be held at the St.Mary’s/St. Joseph’s Social Hall on Jan. 17.

For the photo contest, the photos are going to be displayed at the Massena Public Library, 41 Glenn St. “There is two categories adult and child with a potential to win two voting categories. Judging and the popular vote through Facebook and individual votes,” Furnace said.

This year’s “Frozen Fun 5k Walk/Run” is being held at NYPA Hawkins Point Visitors Center Jan. 24. Furnace noted that the first 50 get a free long sleeve t-shirt and a goody bag including a hat from Verizon Wireless and a travel mug from Tarbell Lodging along with many other small gifts.

Registration will be at 9:30 a.m. with the race starting at 10 a.m.

“Frozen Fun Kids Day” will return to the NYPA Hawkins Point Visitors Center Jan. 24 from 3 p.m. until 8 p.m. The first showing of Disney’s “Frozen” will start at 2 p.m. with subsequent showings at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.

Cubby T Clown and company will be there, games, crafts and others events will also be happening

The fireworks display will light up the sky at 8:30 p.m. Jan. 24 at Bushnell Field and is sponsored by Phillips Memorial Home, according to Furnace.

Closing ceremonies are at Emmanuel Congregational Church on West Orvis Street at 11 a.m. following a pancake breakfast being hosted by the church. The photo contest winners will be announced at that time.

• Jan. 17 – “Frozen Fun” parade, downtown, 10 a.m., hot chocolate to follow at chamber; vendors, crafters, artisans, and demonstrations, St. Mary’s/St. Joseph’s Social, 11 a.m.-4 p.m.; Massena Cup Hockey, Massena Arena; youth street hockey tournament, Triple A, noon-5 p.m.; “Frozen Kids Fair,” Massena Nursery School, Emmanuel Congregational Church, 11 a.m.-2 p.m.; “Terri Lynn Hunter Magic Show,” Massena Library, 2 p.m.; spaghetti dinner, Salvation Army, 4-6 p.m.

• Jan. 18 – Winter Carnival Brunch, Moose Lodge, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.; kickball tournament, Massena Arena back field, 11 a.m.-4 p.m.; snow maze, snow slide, snow painting, face painting, balloons, snow sculpture contest, Boys & Girls Club, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

• Jan. 19 – Public skating, Massena Arena, 10 a.m.-1 p.m.

• Jan. 20 – Spaghetti dinner, Massena Rod & Gun Club, 4:30 p.m.

• Jan. 21 – Crane School of Music acoustic concert with Lonel Woods, Massena Library, 6:30 p.m.

• Jan. 24 – Frozen Fun 5K Walk/Run, Hawkins Point, 9:30 a.m. register, 10 a.m. start; snowshoe & cross-country skiing guided tours, Robert Moses Nature Center, noon-4 p.m.; volleyball tournament, American Legion Post 79, noon; “kids day,” clown, face painting, magic show, movie, snacks, crafts, Hawkins Point, 3-8 p.m.; fireworks presented by Phillips Memorial Home, Bushnell Field, 8:30 p.m.; Massena Senior Citizens Dance, music by Timeline at Massena Community Center, 6 p.m.
