MASSENA -- The Massena Visionaries and a group of volunteers will clean Massena parks on Saturday.

The group are coordinating a grass roots effort to help cleanup the debris, litter, leaves and brush left from the long winter in the village parks. The project is coordinated to coincide with New York State's initiative for volunteerism in the state parks.

Volunteers are asked to report to their choice of Bridges Avenue Wooden Playground, Springs Park or Alcoa Field at 9 a.m. on Saturday with rakes, brooms and gloves for direction.

Massena Visionaries will wear safety-color vests and will offer direction.

The cleanup will finish as needed and will happen rain or shine.

Orvis Street Park and Andrews Street Veterans Park are scheduled to be groomed at a different time.

"This is a great example of what is right about Massena, volunteers coming together to make Massena look better. I thank the Visionaries for their commitment to Massena, and I thank our local CSEA for working with us to allow this community project to go forward,” said Massena Mayor Timmy J. Currier.

According to the Massena Visionaries project coordinator Tyler Fefee, the mission of the project is to assist the work of the village crews by providing some extra hands to spruce up the parks.

"We took a quick inventory of what we could do to help," said Fefee. "Winter really took a toll on the shrubs, lawns and general landscape of the parks. It is our hope that with our concentration on those areas it will be the community's citizens helping out the village."
