MASSENA -- The Massena Housing Authority will go smoke-free starting May 1.
The agency oversees complexes including the Laurel Terrace apartments and the housing project on state Route 37 near Jefferson school.
The new rules will ban smoking inside all housing authority buildings and residences and within 25 feet of all entrances.
The anti-tobacco group Advancing Tobacco-Free Communities St. Lawrence, Jefferson, and Lewis Counties released a statement saying they congratulate the housing authority.
“This policy is designed to eliminate second hand smoke exposure, thereby reducing the deadly health effects facing residents. The Surgeon General has deemed that the only way to completely eliminate second hand smoke exposure is by eliminating indoor smoking, as smoke can travel through cracks in the walls, electrical sockets, ventilation systems, and plumbing,” the statement said. “We commend Massena Housing Authority on their decision to provide residents with safe, healthy housing and on being a leader that other housing authorities can look to when developing their own smoke free policies.”
